Stephen Burks Man Made
Kuba Sugi brings together Stephen Burks Man Made's research into the raffia textiles of the Kuba Kingdom, located in present day Democratic Republic of Congo, with the spiritual traditions of forestry in Japan.
During their residency in Yoshino, Malika and Stephen gave form to figurative and abstract sculptures imbued with the sacred materiality of Japanese cedar or sugi in dialogue with the ceremonial ritual of the Kuba arts.
These works are accompanied by a short documentary, In Search of Kuba, which follows Stephen Burks Man Made on a journey through the megacity of Kinshasa uncovering threads of cultural heritage.
『Kuba Sugi』は、コンゴ民主共和国に存在したクバ王国のラフィア織物に関する Stephen Burks Man Made のリサーチと、日本の林業に根ざした精神的伝統を結びつける試みです。
滞在制作を行った吉野において、マリカとスティーブンは、日本の神聖な杉(スギ)の素材性とクバ芸術の儀式的表現を対話させ、具象的かつ抽象的な彫刻作品を生み出しました。
さらに、本展では短編ドキュメンタリー『In Search of Kuba』も上映します。本作は、巨大都市キンシャサを旅する Stephen Burks Man Made の姿を追いながら、文化的遺産の断片を探し求める記録です。
