1995년 11월 문을 연 성곡미술관은 예술을 통해 사회와 소통하며 한국 문화예술의 저변을 넓혀온 대표적인 사립미술관입니다. 설립의 바탕에는 기업인이자 교육자, 정치인이었던 고(故) 성곡 김성곤(省谷 金成坤, 1913–1975) 선생의 예술과 교육에 대한 깊은 신념이 자리합니다. 그는 예술과 교육이 국가 미래를 밝히는 원동력임을 일찍이 깨달았으며, 이러한 정신은 고(故) 해옹 김석원(海翁 金錫元, 1945–2023) 이사장의 주도로 성곡미술문화재단과 미술관 설립으로 이어졌습니다.
성곡미술관은 한국 현대미술의 흐름을 조망하고 신진 작가를 발굴하는 한편, 학술 연구와 교육 프로그램을 꾸준히 운영하며 독자적인 정체성을 확립해왔습니다. 올해로 개관 30주년을 맞아 그간의 성과를 돌아보고 앞으로도 예술의 사회적 가치를 실현하는 문화 플랫폼으로서 그 위상을 더욱 강화해 나갈 것입니다.
한국의 1980~90년대는 공공미술관의 부족과 현대미술 공간에 대한 수요가 맞물리며 다양한 사립미술관들이 등장하는 사회적 변화를 거듭하고 있었습니다. 이 당시 문을 연 성곡미술관은 신진 작가 공모, 중견 및 원로 작가 전시, 지역 협업, 사회적 의제를 반영한 프로젝트, 국제 교류 등 공공성과 참여를 우선시하며 두드러진 존재로 자리매김했습니다. 앞으로도 과학기술, 인문학, 음악, 건축, 디자인 등 다양한 분야와의 융합을 모색하며, 창의적 실험과 성장을 돕는 열린 공간으로서 깊이 있는 전시를 선보일 것입니다. 예술의 순수한 열정과 창의성을 존중하며, 사회에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 모두에게 열린 미술관이 되고자 합니다. 여러분의 많은 관심과 성원을 부탁합니다.
Founded in November 1995, Sungkok Art Museum is one of Korea’s leading private art institutions. The museum’s founding philosophy stems from the late Kim Sung-gon (省谷 金成坤, 1913–1975), who believed that art and education are essential to shaping the future. This vision was carried on by the late Kim Suk Won (海翁 金錫元, 1945–2023), founder of the Sungkok Art and Culture Foundation, who established the museum to realize that belief.
Since its inception, Sungkok Art Museum has supported generations of Korean artists, developed educational programs, and engaged in academic research. With a focus on creativity and an open atmosphere, it has built a distinct identity while adapting to changing times. In doing so, it has contributed to the broader cultural landscape of Korean contemporary art.
