Colored pencil and oil on canvas. 72.7 x 145.5 cm © the artist.상히읗은 2026년 5월 14일부터 6월 13일까지 원민영의 첫 번째 개인전 《타르타르(Tartare)》를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가가 지속적으로 탐구해온 모호한 감정과 충돌하는 감각들을 회화를 통해 풀어낸다. 원민영의 작업 속 장면들은 웃음과 불편함, 잔혹함과 다정함 사이를 오가며 쉽게 하나의 의미로 정리되지 않는다. 스파게티를 먹는 인물, 서로를 잡아먹는 사마귀, 매달린 원숭이들, 죽은 벌과 이빨을 뽑는 염소 같은 이미지들은 독립적으로 존재하면서도 서로 얽히고 어긋나며 반복되는 세계를 구성한다. 작가는 이러한 흐름을 명확한 결론으로 수렴시키기보다, 여러 가능성이 열린 채 지속되는 상태로 남겨둔다.
전시 공간에는 회화와 함께 수백 개의 따개비 형태 부조가 설치되어 있으며, 이는 침식과 증식, 반복과 소모의 감각을 공간 전체로 확장시킨다. 《타르타르》는 이미 끝났을지도 모르지만 여전히 반복되고 있는 세계의 단면들을 다루며, 하나의 결말보다 멈출 수 없는 움직임과 상태 자체에 주목한다. 제목 ‘타르타르’는 특정한 서사를 지시하기보다, 날것의 감각과 단어의 리듬에서 출발한 이름으로, 전시 전반에 흐르는 기이한 명랑함과 불안정한 감각을 함께 암시한다.

The exhibition brings together a new body of paintings that explore unstable emotions and conflicting sensations through scenes that resist easy interpretation. Figures eating spaghetti, praying mantises consuming one another, hanging monkeys, dead bees, and goats having their teeth pulled appear throughout the works as fragmented yet interconnected images. Moving between humor and discomfort, tenderness and cruelty, Won’s paintings remain deliberately unresolved, allowing multiple possibilities and emotional registers to coexist within the same space.
Alongside the paintings, hundreds of barnacle-like reliefs extend across the lower walls of the exhibition, expanding the atmosphere of repetition, erosion, and accumulation into the space itself. Rather than moving toward a single conclusion, Tartare reflects on a world already caught in an ongoing state of collapse and continuation, where gestures of consumption, attachment, and decay endlessly repeat. The title, borrowed from the raw dish tartare, does not point toward a fixed meaning but instead emerges from the texture and rhythm of the word itself, echoing the exhibition’s peculiar balance of playfulness and unease.
