한강이라는 거대한 빗물받이. 취수, 정수, 급수, 하수, 방류. 물의 경로는 도시의 형태를 결정했다. 계측 가능한 강만이 도시로 유입된다. 측정의 틀 안에서 강의 풍경은 관리되고 유지된다. 작가는 물의 흐름을 수치화하여 통제하는 시스템과 그 잔여를 추적한다. 그러나 강은 늘 우리와 무관하게 흐르고, 범람하고, 증발하여 어떤 방식으로도 포획될 수 없다는 사실을 다시 확인시킨다. 포착하려 할수록 멀어지는 것, 그 앞에서 무엇을 마주할 수 있을까? 《Gutter》는 이 측정과 관리의 체계를 따라가되, 체계가 방치한 것들이 풍경의 틈에서 다시 모습을 드러내는 순간을 다룬다.
홍우인(b.1996)은 대상을 특정한 방식으로 조건 짓는 구조가 단일한 의미나 장면으로 소급되지 않는 지점을 모색한다. 주로 이미지·텍스트·사운드 간의 어긋남을 통해 정합되지 않는 관계를 실험하고, 그 틈에서 발생하는 해석의 지연을 작업의 진입구로 삼는다. 최근에는 도시가 풍경을 낭만적 이미지로 연출하는 방식에 주목하며, 그 매끈한 이미지의 구조적 맥락에 개입하기 위한 장치를 구성한다.
Han river, a vast gutter. Intake, treatment, supply, sewage, and discharge. The path of water determined the form of the city. Only measurable water flows into the city. The river’s landscape is managed and sustained in this framework of measurement. The artist traces the systems and their residue that quantify and control the flow of water. However, a river always flows, overflows, and evaporates without regard to us, continually reminding us that it cannot be captured in any way. What could we confront in front of something that recedes the more we try to catch it? 𝘎𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 first follows this system of measuring and managing, before arriving at moments when what the system has left behind reveals itself in the gaps of the landscape.
Wooin Hong(b.1996) investigates the points where an object-conditioning structure stops being reduced to a unitary meaning or scene. She mainly dislocates the connection between image, text and sound to experiment with incoherent relationships, and incites a delay of interpretation resulting from the gap as an entry point into the work. Recently, she has focused on the way the city renders the landscape as a romantic image. She thereby constructs devices that intervene with the structure as well as the context of this polished image.
