《No Man’s Land》
정상운의 작업에서 도시는 거대한 몸이다. 작고 마른 나에 비해 육중하고, 거친. 그래서 섹시한 몸. 도시는 수많은 몸이 얽혀 단단해진 살로 날 짓누르는, 빛나는 얼굴로 우리를 바라보는, 어떤 남자다. 작가는 그렇게 자신이 나고 자란 서울과 한때 머문 독일의 베를린을 방문한다.

작가의 첫 개인전인 《No Man’s Land》는 베를린에서 건너와 한국에 심어진 장벽과, 그것의 알 수 없는 물질성에서 출발한 크루징-행위를 선보인다. 사진은 이를 매개한다.

전선 사이의 어느 쪽도 점령하지 않는 중간 지대를 뜻하는 ‘No Man’s Land’는 ‘일반’의, ‘남성’이 세운 질서와 시선이 접근할 수 없는 어두운 공간을 만든다. 장벽과 장벽 사이에는 더러운 잡꽃들이 피어난다. 이곳은 회색지대가 아니라, 얼굴 잘린 몸이 총천연색의 멍으로 물드는 장소다.

In Jung’s work, the city is a massive body. Compared to his small, slender frame, it is hung and rough — a body that makes itself desirable. The city is a man, pressing down on him with its hardened, tangled flesh, a mass of entwined bodies, staring back at us with its radiant face. In that vein, he visits not only Berlin, the city he once stayed in, but also Seoul, the city where he was born and raised.

Jung’s first solo exhibition, 𝘕𝘰 𝘔𝘢𝘯’𝘴 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥, presents a repetitive, performative gesture of cruising. It is drawn to a wall transplanted from Berlin into South Korea—its elusive materiality resisting explanation.

The term “No Man’s Land” refers to a buffer zone unclaimed by either side of a frontline. Here, it becomes a dark space inaccessible to the order and gaze imposed by the ‘norm’ and the ‘male.’ Between the walls, filthy tainted blossoms bloom. This is not a grey zone, but a site where beheaded bodies bruise in garish hues.
