일본 야마나카 수플렉스의 디렉터 츠츠미 타쿠야와 이케다 카호를 초청해 대화를 나눕니다. 2014년 설립된 야마나카 수플렉스는 교토시 외곽의 깊은 산 속에 있는 쉐어 스튜디오 겸 프로젝트 공간이자 콜렉티브입니다. 2024년 3월 야마나카 수플렉스는 8개의 단체 및 개인 참여자들이 함께 숙박하며 서로의 실천을 공유하고 네트워크를 만드는 프로젝트 <쉐어 미팅: 혼자 갈 것인가, 더 빨리 도달할 것인가, 멀리 갈 것인가, 함께 죽을 것인가>를 진행했습니다. 야마나카 수플렉스의 활동과 쉐어 미팅의 경험을 토대로 동시대 미술현장에서 함께 생존하기 위해 틈새를 찾고 협업하고 나누는 방법에 대해 이야기 합니다.

We are inviting Takuya Tsutsumi and Kaho Ikeda, directors of Yamanaka Suplex in Japan for a conversation. Founded in 2014, Yamanaka Suplex is a shared studio, project space, and collective in the mountain located on the border of Kyoto City. In March 2024, Yamanaka Suplex hosted the project “Share-Meeting: Go Alone? Arrive Faster? Aim Further? Die Together?” where eight collectives and individual participants stayed together to share their practices and create networks. Based on the activities of Yamanaka Suplex and the experience of Share-Meeting, we will talk about how to find a niche, collaborate, and share in order to survive together in the contemporary art scene.

야마나카 수플렉스는 2014년에 설립된 시가현 오쓰시 야마나카마치에 위치한 공동 스튜디오입니다. 교토 시가지에서 차로 약 15분, 교토와 시가현 경계에 있는 히에이산(比叡山)에 위치하고 있으며, 야외에서 염색, 수지, 도예, 금속가공, 석조, 목공 등 대규모 작품 제작을 실현할 수 있다. 초기부터 단계적으로 제작 공간과 전문 장비 등을 확충하여 2016년부터 2021년 까지는 ‘야마나카 수플렉스 갤러리’도 설치했다. 개인의 작업을 넘어 야마나카 수플렉스라는 단체로서 이벤트, 전시, 워크숍 등을 기획, 진행하고 있으며, 제작뿐만 아니라 발표의 공간으로 기능하면서 예술가들의 지속 가능한 활동 지원과 예술가들 간의 친목에 중점을 두고 활동하고 있습니다. 지금까지의 주요 활동으로는 공유미팅 ‘혼자 갈 것인가, 빨리 도착할 것인가, 멀리 갈 것인가, 모두 전멸할 것인가'(시가, 2024), 야마나카 수플렉스의 별관 ‘MINE (みね)'(오사카, 2022-23), ‘여분의 빛, 피의 소금'(도쿄・교토, 2021), ‘유비의 거울 / The Analogical Mirrors」(시가, 2020), 「야마나카 수플렉스의 모든 사람들과 아마가사키에 있는 당신」(효고, 2019) 등이 있다.
Yamanaka Suplex was established in 2014 as a shared studio in Otsu city, located on Mount Hiei on the border between the Kyoto and Shiga Prefectures in western Japan. The studio occupies a large space, and various facilities are dedicated to making mainly sculptural works using materials such as plastic, iron, rock, ceramic, and wood. This environment not only enables artists to create large-scale art pieces, but also gives opportunities for the space to be used for purposes such as filming, performances, and talk events. In 2016, the studio also established Yamanaka Suplex Gallery in a semi-outdoor space (until 2021). Since 2019 Yamanaka Suplex has been organizing the Yamanaka Artist-in-Residence program to open up international exchange and forge artists’ networks with local cultural practitioners around the world. Apart from the individual practices of the artists situated in the studio, Yamanaka Suplex as an organization curates shows, takes part in exhibitions held in cultural institutions, and holds workshops in various venues, all of which are aimed at supporting artistic activities and encouraging artists’ friendships. Past projects and exhibitions include Share-Meeting: Go Alone? Arrive Faster? Aim Further? Die Together? (Shiga, 2024), a year-long alternative space Yamanaka Suplex annex MINE (Osaka, 2022-23), Light of My World, Salt of the Blood (Tokyo & Kyoto, 2021), The Analogical Mirrors (Shiga, 2020), Show and Tell: The Artists of Yamanaka Suplex and You (Hyogo, 2019).
