「もうあげられるものがなくてね」軽度の認知症だった祖母が亡くなる前、病院に見舞った際にそう言われた。私が成人してからも、会うたびにお小遣いを渡してくるような人だった。喉がギュッと締まり、返答に困った私に続けて投げかけられた言葉を、数年経った今も写真を撮るたびに思い出す。
人が目の前から消えるとき、今はもういないという事実以外に残るのは、僅かに記憶にへばり付くその人のやわらかい存在の輪郭だけだ。
私は情けなく頼りない視線を世界に巡らす。幼き日の風呂場での、今はもうどんな感触だったかも思い出せない、湯気の向こうにあった祖母の背中。
“I have nothing left to give you anymore.”
That’s what my grandmother, in the early stages of dementia, said to me the last time I visited her in the hospital.
Even after I became an adult, she would still give me a bit of pocket money every time we met.
Her words caught me off guard, tightening my throat and leaving me speechless.
And then she said something more — words that still come back to me, even now, whenever I take a photograph.
When someone disappears from your life, what remains is not just the fact that they are no longer here —
but a faint outline of their presence, clinging to memory like mist.
I send out my gaze, helpless and unanchored, into the world.
I try to reach for the feel of her back in the bath from my childhood, beyond the rising steam — a texture I can no longer remember.
