CLEAR GALLERY TOKYOでは、1月12日よりLURK個展「コブラツイスト」を開催いたします。
本展のタイトル「コブラツイスト」はプロレスの技の名前です。その名のもと制作された一連の作品の遊戯的な色面構成と単純化されたイメージからは、毒蛇の怖さや深刻さは感じとれません。
しかしその楽観的なイメージは現代社会に潜む獰猛な一面に対しての作家からの警告でもあります。
本展では昨年福岡で発表した作品群に新作の絵画を合わせて発表いたします。この機会にぜひご覧いただけましたら幸いです。
graffitiは洗練された街遊びだ。自分の名前をどれだけ街に残せるかを競う。
名前をより多くの人に認知させるため、先人たちはタグから進化したスローアップやピースを生み出した。
graffitiには大きく2つの側面があると言えるだろう。1つはクイックに街に残すタグやスローアップ。もう1つは様々な趣向を凝らして文字をデザインするピースだ。日本に住む多くの人はピースを自分の目で見たことがないだろう。なぜならパブリックスペースでピースを書ける場所は日本にはほとんど無いからだ。ゆえに私たちはペイントする壁を求め、廃墟や高架下、さらには下水道にまで潜り込む。柵を乗り越え、山を下り、時には長靴を履いて冷たい水に浸かりながらペイントをするのだ。その過程も含めてピースなのだと最近はよく思う。
私はピースを書くのが好きだ。ピースを書くのはライフワークであり日記である。その日の出来事や発見をピースに織り込むことがよくある。コブラを書いたのもその一連の流れだ。コブラは毒牙を持っている。絡みついて離さない。危ないぞ。気をつけろ。現代社会に対して私はいつでもそんなスタンスでいたい。
今回の作品は、キャンバスを自作し、スポットへ持ち込み、壁に掛けてその上からピースを書き、持ち帰った。普段ピースを書く過程そのものだ。 - LURK
CLEAR GALLERY TOKYO is pleased to present a solo exhibition "Cobra Twist" by LURK. The title of the exhibition, "Cobra Twist," is derived from a professional wrestling move. The playful color compositions and simplified images in the series of works created under this title do not convey the fear or seriousness associated with venomous snakes.
However, the optimistic image also serves as a warning from the artist about the ferocious aspects lurking in contemporary society. In this exhibition, new paintings will be presented together with works showcased in Fukuoka last year.
Graffiti is a refined form of urban play. It's a competition to see how much one can leave their name in the street. To gain recognition for their name among more people, predecessors created Throw up and Piece, which evolved from a simple Tag.
Graffiti can be broadly categorized into two main aspects: one is Tag or Throw up, which is a quick way to leave their name on the street. The other is Piece, which designs letters in various elaborate ways.
Most people living in Japan have probably never seen a Piece with their own eyes. This is because there are very few places in Japan where you can paint Pieces in public spaces. Hence, we seek out walls to paint on, and go into abandoned buildings, under elevated railway tracks and even into the sewers. We climb over fences, climb down mountains and sometimes wear boots and get soaked in cold water while painting. I think these days that the process is part of Piece.
I like painting Pieces. Painting Pieces is my life's work, my diary. I often incorporate events and discoveries of the day into Piece. Painting Cobra was part of that sequence.
Cobras have poisonous fangs. It gets entangled and won't let go. It's dangerous. Be careful.
I always want to take such a stance towards contemporary society.
For the Pieces, I made the canvas myself, brought it to the spot, hung it on the wall, painted and brought it home. This is the process of painting Piece in general. - LURK
