백현주는 개인의 관계가 형성하는 유무형의 시공간과 그로부터 발견할 수 있는 서사의 (비)가시성에 주목해 왔다. 그의 작업은 주로 매체의 성질에 대한 고민과 함께 기록과 재현의 이데올로기를 비판적으로 사유하게 한다. 이를 위해 작가는 미시적 커뮤니티와 국가적 범주를 가로지르고, 공식적 언어 아래에 잠식된 개인의 발화를 수용하기 위한 무대를 가설한다.
본 전시에서 백현주는 베를린 홈볼트 포럼의 녹음기록보관소(Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv)에 소장된 특정 음성 아카이브를 조사한다. 이는 1차 세계 대전 중 독일의 전쟁 포로 수용소에서 녹음한 러시아 이주 한인의 목소리이다. 작가는 관련된 사운드를 수집, 추출, 변주하고, 이를 다시 현재의 이미지에 포개어 놓음으로 미시와 거시가 교차하는 이주의 역사 속에서 국가와 같은 거시적 체계의 통치 이념을 환기하고, 더 나아가 연장된 과거로서의 현재를 마주하게 한다.

Heaven BAEK has focused on the (in)tangible spaces and times shaped by individuals' relationships and networks, as well as the (in)visibility of narratives that emerge from them. Her work often critically examines the ideologies of documentation and representation, engaging with the nature of media. To do so, the artist traverses micro-communities and national frameworks, constructing platforms that embrace individual voices submerged beneath official narratives.
In this exhibition, BAEK investigates a specific audio archive housed in the Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin. The archive contains recordings of Korean migrants in Russia, captured during World War I at German prisoner-of-war camps. By collecting, extracting, reinterpreting, and editing these sounds, BAEK layers them onto today's imagery. This process evokes the structures of national ideologies and governance within the intersecting micro- and macro-histories of migration. Ultimately, her work confronts the extended present as a continuation of the past.
