私の故郷である栃木県宇都宮市には、古くからの石蔵が300棟近く存在している。2度の大きな戦火にも耐えた石蔵を支えたのは、火に強い大谷石(おおやいし)であった。
大谷石は荒々しい見た目であるが、独特の柔らかさをもつ。その特徴は宇都宮市大谷町の山々や採石場を彷彿とさせる。
実家の近所にも石蔵があり、気に留めないほど風景の一部として馴染んでいた。しかし、いつの日からか、石蔵が目立つようになっていることに気がついた。
今まで敷地の奥でひっそりと息づいていた石蔵だが、住宅地がまばらになったことで全貌が見えるようになっていた。その風景は、子供の頃に見た故郷の風景とは明らかに違っていた。
かつて200カ所あった大谷石の採石場も現在は4カ所のみとなり、石蔵の数も急速に減りつつある。私の目の前に姿を現した石蔵も、⻑い歴史の中では一瞬の出来事なのかもしれない。
Nearly 300 historic stone warehouses can be found in my hometown of Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture. The Oya stone, known for its fire resistance, supported these warehouses that withstood two major wars.
Despite its rugged appearance, Oya stone possesses a unique softness. Its characteristics evoke the mountains and quarries of Oya-machi in Utsunomiya.
There were stone warehouses near my parents’ home that had blended so seamlessly into the surroundings that I hardly noticed it. However, at some point, I realized that these stone warehouses were becoming increasingly prominent.
Previously, the stone warehouses had been quietly tucked away at the back of the property, but now it is fully visible due to the decreasing density of nearby houses. The scene was clearly different from the one I remembered from my childhood.
Once there were 200 Oya stone quarries, but now only four remain, and the number of stone warehouses is rapidly declining. The stone warehouses before me may only be a fleeting presence in the grand sweep of history.
